Understanding the Female Fat Cell - (Guys Should Read This, Too!)
by Drew Rivetty

By now you probably realized how stubborn your fat cells can be. They simply won't release that stored fat! There's a very good explanation for this.

Fat cells operate with two types of enzymes--ones that store fat (lipogenic) and ones that release it (lipolytic). Ideally, you would want to fortify your fat cells with the latter. However, nature doesn't exactly work this way. If you believe that your fat cells are "stubborn," chances are they are lopsided with an abundant amount of fat storing enzymes and barely any of the fat releasing ones. I know, it's not fair.

Women, for obvious reasons involving everything to do with procreation, are programmed with many more fat-storing enzymes than men. This is why women gripe about how quickly guys can lose weight. Well, women are right. Now that you know the science behind your frustrations, what can you do about it?

Simple. Lower your fat-storing enzymes and increase the fat-burning ones. Actually, I lied. It's not that simple. Which is why you have seen so many women on yo-yo diets ending up worse than they were before.

Men, you are not excused here. For all the NASCAR and football we watch, we're not the testosterone monsters that we are led to believe. Several studies show that men have 30 percent less of this uber hormone mostly due to stress and the introduction of estrogen into our environment, namely plastics, soy and beer. Guys, you might want to go look in the mirror to check for man boobs.

There is a way to outsmart your fat cells. The trick is that it takes effort, and you need to be committed to permanent changes. And... it takes time. Remember, men not plagued with estrogen lose weight quickly, but for women it takes much longer.

Think of this as a step-by-step process you can go over each week. This is going to involve some changes in the way you approach your workouts, your diet and extra exercise activities. I realize this is a lot to incorporate and it takes about three months to introduce and develop these habits.

I'm borrowing many of these concepts from Debra Waterhouse, author of "Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell." The reason I agree with her is that she has outlined many concepts that continuously appear in other respected writings on healthy ways to lose fat. Her approach is not new, but rather a tried and tested one.

To get started, we can first look at something you are probably already doing--lifting weights! Let's just assume that most of us need many more of those fat-burning enzymes. The only way to increase them is through exercise. Fat cells need oxygen, and when they get it, it's bombs away fat!!

The fat goes into the bloodstream, then into the muscles. Muscles contain mitochondria, which converts the fat into heat and water. Hello, sweat! The lesson learned here is that muscle is vital to burning fat. If your muscle mass is too lean, then the fat in the bloodstream bypasses the muscle and returns to your fat cells. :(

Ok, so building muscle is one way to get started. But in order to earn your black belt in fat cell shrinking, you need to follow through with these steps.

    1. Exercise to aerobicize your fat cells.
    2. Eat healthy foods that your body needs.
    3. Eat the right amount of food that goes to your body, not your fat cells.
    4. Shrink and multiply your meals.
    5. Become a daytime eater.
    6. Cut carbohydrates.

Wanna tackle all of these at once? Be my guest, but realistically for the rest of us we may need to take it step by step. The first one for today was feeding your brain cells with knowledge that will hopefully dictate your decisions in the future about exercise and eating.
